This event will take place sometime in November or December.
Every year the Livermore-Pleasanton Firefighter Foundation with participation from the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District conducts the Livermore Community Canned Food Drive.
How it works:
Mid-Late October participation requests are delivered to all of the K-8 schools in Livermore. Generally
8-12 schools choose to participate each year. Once a school has decided to participate fliers are sent
home with the students.
After fliers are sent home, the students have the next several weeks to bring in their donated canned goods to school. Each participating school designates a contact person who stays in touch with the LPFF to let us know how the collections are coming along with the volume of cans and other goods collected. The LPFF then coordinates a pick up date with all the schools, generally during the week before Thanksgiving break.
Once pick up date and times are set volunteers from the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department go to each school to collect the donated goods. From there the goods are stored until the evening before Thanksgiving, at which point they are delivered to the Bothwell Center where the canned food and other goods are sorted by the Livermore Community Thanksgiving Dinner volunteers and local Boy Scout Troops.
After sorting, much of the canned food is used to supplement the Community Thanksgiving Dinner where volunteers will serve approximately 1,200 dinners from 1-5 on Thanksgiving Day. Many of the dinners are delivered throughout Livermore to those who are not physically able to make it down to the Bothwell Center. Any donated goods that are not used for the dinner are delivered to the Tri Valley Haven food pantry where they are distributed as needed.
